A former Royal Air Force station located near the village of Upwood in Cambridgeshire, RAF Upwood was built during the first world war in 1917 becoming home to the No. 191 (Night) Training Squadron. They were succeeded by the No 90 Squadron during the second world war and it remained an active military base until 1982 where it became home to the Nene Valley Gliding Club, finally closing its doors permanently in 1994 to be sold off to private owners. Today the base remains abandoned with many old military buildings still on site making it a great spot for a little urban exploration

This used to be my absolute favourite urbex location to visit, I had so many chilled days out walking the dog there and capturing images of the buildings. I remember when there was even a couple of tanks on the site that were there for years until it was decided they were a safety hazard. These photographs are fantastic Paul, they bring so many happy memories back for me. It’s such a shame the site became a housing estate, it would have been nice to preserve its history for sure.
Hi Sarah, yes it is such a shame RAF Upwood got demolished to become housing, it was my go-to location for so many years to introduce people to urbex photography. Thanks for your kind words on my photos, I hope you are managing to get out and explore new sites!
