FAQ’s
Where will this course take place?
This course will be ran throughout Birmingham. If you live or work centrally I’m happy to run this course at your premises, otherwise we’ll run it on the streets of Birmingham giving you every opportunity to get a hands on practical experience.
Do I Need Certain Skills Or Equipment To Attend?
This is a beginners course and as such, no skills are required to attend this course. The only equipment you will need to bring with you is your DSLR or Mirrorless camera and lenses.
Can You Recommend Camera Equipment For Me Prior To Me Attending?
I get a lot of requests for help with camera equipment recommendations, almost daily in fact and offer a Personalised Photography Equipment Recommendation service which you can find by clicking here.
Recommending a camera and the best lenses to buy really has lots of different factors involved in it which need to be investigated first such as what the equipment will be most used for, budgets, your expectations on image quality, your current level and aspirations, etc. Hence the above service so we can really drill down into finding you the best equipment.
Alternatively, some people attend my courses and borrow a camera from me for the day to do so, we can then incorporate this recommendation as part of the course at no extra cost. The benefit of doing it this way is that I have a lot of cameras and lenses you can try and see the difference between prior to purchasing anything. The downside is your not learning on your own equipment of course, so there are pluses and minuses to doing it both ways, it depends on what you think works best for you.
Are You DBS Checked?
Paul is DBS checked and is happy to share a copy of his DBS certificate with any client, no matter whether they are a business, charity, organisation or individual.

Edward Corwall –
This was a fantastic weekend. For context, I have never used a mirrorless camera or DSLR and used a camera provided by Paul. Paul was incredibly knowledgeable and conveyed the information in a very clear and practical way. He taught me fundamentals which have given me the confidence to start making videos right away. He also taught me about how to use lighting, audio and key compositional techniques. Not only this, he took a look at my YouTube channel and gave me really insightful opinions to help me take it to the next level. Paul catered the weekend for the things I particularly wanted to learn. I left the weekend feeling fully empowered in my ability to make videos, educated in the tools needed and inspired to make them. It was beyond my expectations of what I could learn in a weekend. Thank you Paul.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but I have to say that this course was really fantastic. Paul’s teaching style was clear and detailed, and he was at all times patient and thorough. As a beginner who at the start knew very little I can say that I definitely came away with lots of knowledge and feeling more confident. I leant so much about filmmaking over the two days that I now feel that I can attempt to create some good videos to compliment, enhance and promote my creative practice. I would highly recommend this course!

This is easily the best filmmaking course for absolute beginners and a great 2 day experience overall. Paul is an outstanding teacher and filmmaker to learn from. His obvious experience shows and his ability to make complex techniques for beginners seem extremely easy and achievable. Its also amazing just how much you can learn in just 2 days. I went from knowing practically nothing about video to running around Birmingham with a gimbal! So much fun! You will learn about shutterspeed, aperture, ISO, audio, composition, stabilising footage, video editing etc Paul is patient, knowledgeable, open to any questions and has a very light-hearted common sense approach. If you, like me have been desperate to make films or video, but, became overwhelmed with where to start…. this course is an excellent place to do so. 5 stars, highly recommended.

What a fantastic course this turned out to be with Paul. We spent 2 days breaking down the mysteries of filmmaking and I left the course at the end feeling confident in my abilities going forward to create high quality, cinematic videos.

As filmmaking courses go, this one has to be right up there with the best of them. I was so impressed with the sheer amount of knowledge and hands on practical advice I received across the 2 days with Paul. I went from barely having used my camera to creating a somewhat professional looking video in just a couple of days which was all down to Paul’s patience and experience teaching beginners. I really enjoyed this course and when I’ve had time to practice everything I’m sure I’ll be back to continue my learning.
